This genuine Ford Motorcraft fuel tank filler cap seals the fuel filler neck across a broad mid 2000s Ford and Mercury range including the 2004 through 2007 Ford Taurus, Explorer and Explorer Sport Trac, Five Hundred, and Freestyle, along with the Mercury Sable, Montego, and Mountaineer, keeping the fuel system sealed and maintaining the pressure and vacuum balance the evaporative emissions system depends on. Ford and Motorcraft catalog it as the fuel tank cap, a non locking threaded cap with a calibrated pressure and vacuum relief valve and a captive tether that keeps the cap attached to the filler neck during refueling. The seal and ratchet mechanism wear with age, and a hardened gasket or worn cap is a leading cause of a check engine light with an evaporative emissions leak code, often with a noticeable fuel smell near the filler and a cap that will not click or hold pressure.
