  This genuine Ford Motorcraft fuel tank filler cap seals the fuel filler neck on the 2005 through 2006 Ford Five Hundred and the 2005 through 2007 Ford Freestyle, keeping the fuel system sealed against vapor loss and holding the pressure and vacuum balance the evaporative emissions system requires. Ford and Motorcraft catalog it as the fuel tank cap, a non locking threaded cap fitted with a calibrated pressure and vacuum relief valve and a captive tether that keeps the cap attached to the filler neck so it is not lost while refueling. The internal seal and ratcheting mechanism are wear items, and as the gasket hardens and the cap loosens the most common symptom is an illuminated check engine light with an evaporative system leak code, sometimes with a fuel odor near the filler and a cap that no longer clicks or seals.
