This Genuine Ford axle seal, cataloged as a drive axle shaft seal, is the rear-axle shaft seal that rides where each rear axle shaft passes through the axle housing, keeping differential gear oil inside the housing and road contaminants out. It fits 2007-2017 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator and installs at the left or right rear position. When the seal hardens, wears or is disturbed during axle or brake service, gear oil weeps past the shaft and can run down the axle tube, contaminate the rear brake shoes or pads, leave fluid spots under the vehicle, and eventually lower differential oil enough to risk bearing and gear damage. A leaking rear seal is also a common source of a burnt-oil smell and a greasy film on the inside of the wheel. Fitting a fresh seal whenever the axle shaft is pulled restores a clean, oil-tight interface and protects both the differential and the brakes.
