Ford catalog name: Insulator Assembly. This transmission mount, or insulator, cradles the transaxle and isolates driveline vibration and torque reaction from the vehicle body, keeping the powertrain located while damping the shocks that would otherwise transmit into the cabin. The mount combines a stamped-steel bracket with a bonded rubber or hydraulic-fluid-filled isolator that absorbs engine movement under acceleration, braking, and gear engagement. A failed transmission mount typically announces itself with a heavy clunk or bang when shifting into Drive or Reverse, a shudder felt through the floor at idle, increased vibration during acceleration, and in severe cases visible powertrain rock or contact between components. Rubber that has cracked, collapsed, separated from its metal, or leaked its hydraulic fluid can no longer control that motion and should be replaced to protect adjacent mounts, hoses, and axles from the added strain.
