The gearshift lever is the external selector arm and shaft assembly that mounts on the transmission's manual control shaft; the shift cable connects to it so that moving the column or console selector rotates the manual valve inside the transmission through Park, Reverse, Neutral, and the drive ranges, and it positions the manual lever position sensor that tells the powertrain control module which gear range is selected.
