This is the steel strap that wraps under and around the fuel tank and bolts to the frame, carrying the weight of the tank and its fuel and holding it securely against the chassis mounts. Over years of road salt and moisture the original strap can rust through, stretch or crack, and a failing strap allows the tank to sag, shift or, in the worst case, drop, which is both a safety hazard and a source of clunks, rattles and fuel-line strain.
