It forms the pressure-tight seal between the coolant hose connector and its mating port so the cooling system holds its designed pressure and coolant is routed without leaking. When this seal ages it hardens and shrinks, allowing coolant to weep at the hose connection; drivers typically notice orange or green crust at the joint, a coolant odor, a dropping reservoir level, or light overheating during highway driving.
