  This is the genuine Ford front shock absorber and strut assembly for the Ford Focus Electric, the left hand unit for vehicles built with the standard suspension, without the touring or handling suspension packages, from the 12/5/12 production break onward. The strut is a structural member of the MacPherson front suspension: it locates the top of the steering knuckle, carries the coil spring seat, and damps wheel motion so the tire stays in contact with the road surface. Its damping also controls body roll in corners, dive under braking, and the settling motion after bumps. A worn or leaking strut announces itself in ways an owner will recognize immediately: a floating or wallowing ride, the nose diving hard under braking, the car continuing to bounce after a dip in the road, a clunk or knock over expansion joints, uneven and cupped tire wear, and oily residue visible on the strut body where the damper seal has let go. Because this Focus Electric variant carries a heavier battery pack, the front damping calibration is specific to the application, so the correct part number matters. Replacement is a chassis job that requires safe support of the vehicle, spring compression if the coil is being transferred, and a wheel alignment afterward. Important: the strut top nut and the strut-to-knuckle nut and bolt are single-use fasteners; they must not be reused or reinstalled and must be replaced with new hardware and torqued to specification during assembly. Ford also recommends renewing struts in pairs across an axle so damping stays balanced side to side. As a genuine Ford component, the damping curve, spring seat height, and mounting geometry match the factory original, so ride height and handling return to the original specification.
