This genuine Ford Power Take-Off Unit, cataloged as a transfer case, is the front-axle drive unit that splits torque from the transaxle to the rear driveshaft in all-wheel-drive models. It fits the 2013-2019 Ford Explorer and Taurus, the 2016-2018 Ford Edge, and the 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX with 3.5L and 3.7L V6 engines. The PTU uses an internal hypoid gearset and clutch to route power rearward on demand; because it runs hot and holds only a small fluid charge, it is a known wear item. A failing unit whines, growls, or grinds, leaks gear fluid from the seals, causes shudder or binding in turns, and in severe cases seizes and disables all-wheel drive. Installing the OEM assembly restores correct gear ratios and seal fit matched to the driveline. Fresh fluid at installation and inspection of the connecting axle seals and driveshaft are recommended to protect the new unit. This is the correct factory transfer case and power take-off unit for these all-wheel-drive Ford and Lincoln crossovers and sedans of this generation.
