• Description:

  This is a genuine Ford catalytic converter assembly for the driver side of the 18-20 F-150 equipped with the 5.0L V8. The catalytic converter reduces tailpipe emissions by oxidizing carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water and reducing nitrogen oxides to nitrogen and oxygen through chemical reactions on the precious-metal catalyst surface inside the substrate. The converter is integral to the emissions control system and is monitored by upstream and downstream oxygen sensors that report the converter's efficiency to the powertrain control module. Failure modes include substrate damage from misfire-induced overheating that melts or shatters the internal honeycomb, substrate contamination from coolant or engine oil entering the exhaust due to engine failures, mechanical damage to the converter shell from collision impact, and internal flow restriction that produces backpressure problems and reduced engine performance. Symptoms include diagnostic trouble codes for catalyst efficiency below threshold, audible rattling from the converter shell when broken substrate pieces move inside, sulfur or rotten-egg odor at the tailpipe, reduced engine performance from excess backpressure, and emissions test failures.
