This Genuine Ford Motorcraft accessory drive belt tensioner is the outer tensioner assembly that maintains correct tension on the serpentine belt driving the alternator, water pump, and other engine accessories on the 3.0L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V6. It fits 2018-2021 Ford F-150 trucks equipped with the 3.0L Power Stroke diesel engine and carries Ford engineering number JL3Z-6A228-A. The spring-loaded tensioner keeps constant load on the belt so it does not slip, squeal, or shed material as the accessories cycle. A worn or failing tensioner is typically felt as a chirping or squealing belt on cold start, a rattling or knocking noise from the front of the engine, visible belt wobble, accelerated belt wear, or a seized pulley bearing that can throw the belt. Because the internal spring and pulley bearing wear together, Ford recommends replacing the complete tensioner assembly rather than servicing individual pieces, and inspecting the drive belt at the same time. Installed as the outer unit in the accessory drive layout, this Motorcraft assembly restores factory spring tension and pulley alignment to original specification. Always relieve tension with the proper serpentine belt tool before removing the belt, verify correct belt routing on reassembly, and confirm the pulley spins freely and true once installed.
