The sensor reads the position of the camshaft via a reluctor wheel and reports timing data back to the powertrain control module, which uses the input to schedule fuel injection events and ignition timing. Common failure modes include sensor electrical failure, contamination from oil seepage past the sensor o-ring, or damage to the wiring harness pigtail.
