This is the rear axle pinion locking nut for 2019 through 2023 Ford Ranger trucks. The pinion nut clamps the pinion bearing stack on the rear differential and sets the bearing preload after the pinion shim has been selected. Use this part as part of any rear axle service that involves removing the pinion (pinion seal replacement, pinion bearing service, gear set installation). This is a one-time-use fastener in most applications; the locking feature is designed to be installed once and does not retain proper torque after removal. Ordering a fresh nut is part of every Ford rear axle pinion service procedure. This is a genuine Ford OEM piece with the factory thread pitch and the correct locking feature. Important: pinion nut torque on the Ranger rear axle is critical to bearing preload and gear-mesh performance; consult the Ford service manual for the proper torque procedure and the rotating-torque method for setting preload. non-OEM pinion nuts are not recommended because the torque-to-yield and locking features are specific to the OEM design.
