This is a genuine Ford automatic transmission oil cooler for 20-25 Explorer, Lincoln Aviator, and Police Interceptor Utility models. The part supersedes the earlier L1MZ-7869-H cooler that was associated with internal cross-leak failures, and it is the updated design Ford released for vehicles built after February 2020 to address the known milky coolant issue. The transmission cooler routes hot ATF through coolant-cooled passages to keep the 10-speed automatic at the design operating temperature under load. Internal cross-leakage of the original cooler allowed coolant and transmission fluid to mix, which appears as a pink milky residue in the coolant reservoir and contaminated ATF in the transmission. Symptoms of a failing transmission cooler include milky pink coolant in the reservoir, ATF that smells burnt or appears thin, harsh shifts, slipping, a check engine light for transmission temperature, low coolant level without an external leak, and reduced fuel economy. Buyers typically need this cooler during the documented field service action, after a leak is diagnosed, or proactively when an early-build vehicle is brought in for unrelated work.
