• Description:

  This is a genuine Ford CV axle shaft o-ring designed to seal the left, or driver's side, front axle stub shaft as it enters the power transfer unit on AWD-equipped vehicles. The o-ring is included as a component of the left axle assembly service kit and fits 20-25 Explorer, 20-25 Aviator, and 20-25 Police Interceptor Utility builds equipped with all-wheel drive. The o-ring sits in a machined groove on the axle stub and creates the primary seal between the axle splines and the PTU output bore, preventing PTU fluid from migrating out of the case along the shaft. Technicians reach for this part during any service where the left axle is removed from the PTU, including axle replacement, half-shaft boot repair on the inboard joint, PTU service, or sub-frame drop. Critically, Ford service procedure flags this o-ring as a single-use part that cannot be reused or reinstalled, so a fresh seal must be on hand before disassembly begins. Reusing the original o-ring is a known cause of PTU fluid weep complaints reported within a few hundred miles of axle service, and the resulting leak can drain the PTU and damage the gear set if missed. Install the new o-ring dry on the stub shaft, then coat lightly with the recommended Ford PTU lubricant before sliding the axle into the housing to avoid pinching the seal during engagement. Verify the axle is fully seated and circlip locked, then top up PTU fluid to specification before returning the vehicle to service for road testing. Inspect for any signs of leakage.
