  This Genuine Ford ML3Z-4662-A is the differential pinion crush sleeve for 20-25 F-150 and Transit applications equipped with the 9.75-inch ring gear axle. The crush sleeve installs between the inner and outer pinion bearings on the pinion shaft and is designed to deform under controlled compression as the pinion nut is tightened, setting the precise bearing preload required for smooth, quiet differential operation. The sleeve is a single-use part and must be replaced whenever the pinion nut is loosened or the differential is opened, since once crushed the sleeve cannot be reused to the original preload spec. Technicians install this sleeve during a complete differential rebuild, during a ring and pinion gear set replacement, during a pinion bearing service, after a pinion seal replacement requires the pinion nut to be removed, or during a gear ratio change. Installation requires the new sleeve to be installed between the inner and outer pinion bearings, the pinion nut to be tightened gradually while monitoring pinion preload torque with an inch-pound torque wrench, and the tightening to stop as soon as the rolling preload reaches the factory spec. Over-crushing the sleeve forces a second replacement, so go slow.
