The sensor measures rotational speed of an internal shaft or drum and reports it to the transmission control module, which compares the input and output speeds to monitor ratio error and detect slip in any clutch element. The 10R140 uses multiple speed sensors at different locations inside the case, and each location uses a specific sensor design. Symptoms of a failed sensor include harsh shifts, default mode with the transmission locked in a single gear, stored diagnostic codes related to ratio or speed signal, and intermittent loss of shift control. non-OEM sensors sometimes use weaker magnets or off-tolerance air gap, leading to noisy signal or early failure.
