  This is the genuine Ford tailgate latch operating control rod for 21-25 F-150, fitting trucks with the manual lock configuration and without the split power-lock tailgate. The rod transfers the motion of the tailgate handle to the latch mechanism inside the tailgate, releasing the gate when the handle is pulled. A bent, corroded, or disconnected rod is the most common reason a tailgate handle pulls freely but the gate does not release; less commonly, the rod can crack or fatigue at one of the formed bends. Replacement requires partial removal of the tailgate inner trim panel and access to the latch mechanism. Inspect the latch itself, the operating rod retention clips, and the handle pivot during the same service since access is already open. After installation, confirm full handle travel without binding and verify that the latch releases cleanly with no hesitation. Both sides of the latch system should release simultaneously and the gate should drop without sticking. If the gate continues to bind after rod replacement, inspect the latch mechanisms themselves for corrosion or wear, since a worn latch can produce symptoms similar to a failed operating rod even after the rod has been replaced.
