• Description:

  This genuine Ford rear pinion bearing cup, base number 4616, is the outer race for a pinion bearing in the rear axle assembly used across a wide span of Ford, Lincoln and Mercury rear-drive vehicles including the F-150, Ranger, Crown Victoria, Mark series, Navigator, Capri, Cougar and Tracer. The cup is the hardened race pressed into the differential housing against which the pinion bearing rollers ride, locating the drive pinion and carrying the thrust and radial loads generated where the pinion meets the ring gear. A pitted, spalled or brinelled cup lets the pinion shift, which corrupts the gear mesh and pinion preload. Drivers replacing this part are usually addressing a rear-axle whine or rumble that varies with throttle, a setup performed during a gear swap or differential rebuild, or contamination found in the axle oil. Because the cup and its matching cone wear together, they are always replaced as a matched bearing set, never individually. Manufactured to Ford specifications, it provides the correct press fit and race geometry for accurate pinion preload using the factory shim or crush sleeve. Drive the new cup fully seated, install the matching bearing, and set pinion preload and backlash to specification, checking the contact pattern before final assembly.
