This Motorcraft engine coolant thermostat regulates coolant flow between the engine and radiator to bring the 6.9L and 7.3L indirect-injection (IDI) diesel up to operating temperature quickly and hold it there for efficient combustion, proper cab heat, and reduced wear. It stays closed while the engine is cold so coolant circulates only through the block, then opens near its calibrated set point to admit radiator flow as heat builds. It fits 1984-1996 Ford F-250 and F-350 pickups and E-250 through E-350 Econoline vans, plus the 1984 F-150 6.9L diesel, across the 6.9L and 7.3L IDI diesel applications. A thermostat that sticks open causes a persistent cold-running condition, a heater that never warms, poor fuel economy, and a cold-idle complaint, while one that sticks closed drives rapid overheating, coolant loss, and possible head-gasket damage. Install it with a fresh gasket, oriented with the sensing element toward the engine, refill with the specified coolant, and bleed air from the system. Supplied as a genuine Ford Motorcraft service thermostat to restore factory temperature control.
