When this seal hardens, cracks, or takes a set, the EGR joint leaks and drivers typically experience a rough idle, a lit check engine light with EGR flow codes such as insufficient or excessive flow, a faint exhaust smell, hesitation under light throttle, and occasionally a hissing near the EGR tube.
