This genuine Ford lock hub assembly retainer ring secures the automatic front locking hub onto the spindle of the four-wheel-drive front axle, holding the hub cam and bearing assembly in position so the front wheels engage and disengage the drivetrain reliably. It fits 1998 through 2003 Ford Ranger 4WD models and shares the same front auto-locking hub family used across the light-truck platform of that era. When this retaining ring corrodes, spreads, or is lost during a hub or wheel-bearing service, the locking hub can loosen on the spindle, producing a clicking or grinding noise from the front wheel, intermittent or failed four-wheel-drive engagement, and excessive hub end play. Because it is a spring-steel snap ring that can lose tension once removed, Ford recommends installing a fresh ring whenever the locking hub is disturbed rather than reusing the original.
