This genuine Ford fuel tank vent valve is part of the evaporative emissions (EVAP) system and controls the venting of fuel vapor from the top of the fuel tank to the charcoal canister while preventing liquid fuel from escaping during vehicle motion, cornering, or a rollover event. It fits 1998 through 2006 Ford vehicles including the Mustang and the Lincoln Town Car built from 11/17/1998, mounting at the tank as the vapor vent point. When this valve sticks, clogs, or leaks, the sealed EVAP system can no longer breathe correctly, which typically sets evaporative leak or vent trouble codes in the P0440 range, illuminates the check-engine light, and can produce a fuel odor or a fuel filler nozzle that clicks off prematurely while refueling. A failed valve may also allow a slight pressure or vacuum buildup in the tank. Replacing it with the correct factory valve restores proper tank venting and allows the EVAP monitor to run and pass. Ford catalogs this component within the fuel vapor group as the fuel tank vent valve. Inspect the connecting vapor lines and grommet for cracks while servicing, and confirm the valve orientation is correct so it seals against liquid carryover while still allowing vapor flow to the canister.
