The banjo bolt passes through the eye of the brake hose fitting and threads into the caliper, with the hose sealed on each side by crush washers, so it is both a fastener and part of the pressurized fluid path. This is a single-use, torque-critical fitting that should not be reused once it has been removed; always install a new banjo bolt with new crush washers, because reused hardware and washers can fail to seal and lead to a brake fluid leak and loss of braking.
