This is the genuine Ford differential cover bolt, a 5/16-18 hex-head fastener that secures the rear differential cover to the axle housing on Expedition, F-150, Navigator and Town Car applications. The bolt clamps the cover and its gasket or sealant against the housing to keep the gear lubricant sealed inside and contaminants out. It comes with pre-applied thread locker on the threads, which helps maintain clamp load against the vibration and thermal cycling the axle experiences and reduces the chance of a bolt backing out and causing a leak. These bolts are replaced when the differential is serviced for a gear oil change, cover reseal, gasket replacement or internal axle work, and supersede the earlier E99Z-4346-A and F4TZ-4346-A bolts. Because the factory thread locker is consumed once the bolt has been installed and removed, fitting fresh bolts with intact pre-applied locker is the reliable way to restore correct retention; clean the cover and housing sealing surfaces thoroughly, install the cover with the specified gasket or sealant, and tighten the bolts evenly in a crossing pattern to the specified torque to avoid distorting the cover and causing leaks. Refill the axle with the correct quantity and grade of gear lubricant afterward. Confirm your axle and application against the VIN before ordering.
