  This is the genuine Ford hex spindle nut, a retainer ring nut from the HN1 base hardware family used at the front hub on a broad range of vehicles including Explorer and Expedition of the 1990s and early 2000s along with many other applications. The spindle nut threads onto the spindle to set and retain the front wheel bearing assembly, controlling bearing preload and holding the hub, bearing and washer stack in place so the wheel turns smoothly without play. A correctly torqued spindle nut is essential to bearing life and safe handling; an over- or under-tightened nut, or a worn or damaged one, leads to bearing noise, looseness, uneven wear or in severe cases hub failure.
