  This is the genuine Ford nut retainer, a front spindle nut retainer in the 3/4 inch size from the HX1 base hardware family, used at the front hub on F-150, Ranger, F-250 and F-350 applications. The retainer seats over the adjusting nut and locks the carefully set front wheel bearing preload in place so the nut cannot back off or tighten on its own as the wheel turns, aligning to the spindle's cotter-pin provision to hold the adjustment securely. It is the locking element that keeps the bearing adjustment from changing in service, and it works together with the spindle adjusting nut in the hub.
