  This is the genuine Ford exhaust manifold stud in the 3/8-16 size, about 2.64 inches long, used at the longer manifold-to-cylinder-head positions on the 4.9 liter inline-six and the 5.0, 5.8 and 7.5 liter V8 engines fitted to F-250 and E-250 and related trucks and vans of the late 1980s and 1990s. The stud threads into the cylinder head and gives a fixed post that the manifold and any spacer or bracket slide over before being clamped with a nut, providing stable, repeatable retention at the deeper mounting locations while handling the severe heat cycling of an exhaust joint. As with all exhaust hardware these studs corrode, seize and break over time, and a broken or missing stud produces an exhaust leak, a ticking sound and lost performance. Fitting a fresh stud restores a sound manifold mounting. Because this is a heat-cycled fastener, clean or chase the threads in the head, apply anti-seize as appropriate to ease future removal, thread the stud to the correct depth, and torque the manifold nuts evenly in the proper sequence to specification so the manifold is not warped or cracked. Inspect the manifold, gaskets and remaining studs while apart and renew as needed.
