This Genuine Ford engine oil filler cap seals the oil fill opening on the valve cover, keeping oil in and contaminants out while maintaining proper crankcase pressure as part of the positive crankcase ventilation path. Its molded seal and quarter-turn lock hold a positive seal against oil vapor and dirt. This cap fits a broad range of Ford 4.0L SOHC V6 applications, including 2002-2010 Explorer, 2002-2010 Mercury Mountaineer, 2001-2010 Explorer Sport Trac, 2005-2010 Mustang, and 2001-2011 Ranger, and it also cross-applies to later F-150 service. Drivers replace the cap when the original is cracked or brittle, when the rubber seal has hardened and weeps oil around the fill neck, when a check-engine or rough-idle condition traces to a crankcase vacuum leak at the cap, or when the cap has simply gone missing. A poor-sealing cap lets oil mist escape and can pull unmetered air into the engine. Ford catalogs this component as the Cap Assy - Oil Filler, and it corresponds to Motorcraft EC-778.
