• Description:

  This genuine Ford Motorcraft air charge temperature sensor, also called the intake air temperature or IAT sensor, measures the temperature of the air entering the engine and reports it to the powertrain control module so the PCM can correct fuel delivery and spark timing for air density. Cold, dense intake air carries more oxygen and needs more fuel, while warm air needs less, and this sensor gives the computer the reading it uses to keep the mixture correct across weather and load changes. It is a broad multi-vehicle service part used across many Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury cars and trucks from roughly 1991 through 2008, including the Mustang, and threads into the intake manifold, air cleaner, or intake tube depending on the application. A failed or drifting sensor commonly sets a check engine light with intake air temperature circuit codes and can cause hard cold starts, rough idle, hesitation, reduced fuel economy, and occasional pinging as the PCM calculates timing from a wrong temperature. The sensor is a simple two-wire thermistor, so its resistance changes with temperature, and a value stuck high or low will bias the entire fuel and spark strategy. This Motorcraft unit uses the correct connector and thread form for a direct fit without adapters. Handle the sensing tip carefully, keep it free of oil and cleaner residue that can slow its response, and seat it fully with any supplied O-ring or gasket so unmetered air cannot enter. Confirm the connector shape and mounting location for your specific model and year before installing, since Ford used this sensor family in several intake positions over its long production run.
