This Motorcraft brake light switch, also cataloged as a stop lamp switch, mounts at the brake pedal and closes its internal contacts the moment the pedal is pressed, sending power to the rear stop lamps and providing the brake-applied signal used by cruise control, the shift interlock, and related systems. It serves a broad range of 1984 through 2004 Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury cars, trucks, and vans as a genuine Ford OEM plunger-actuated switch. When the switch fails, drivers typically find that the brake lamps do not illuminate when the pedal is pressed, or stay on constantly, and may experience cruise control that will not engage or disengage, a brake-shift interlock that prevents shifting out of park, or intermittent electrical faults tied to the brake signal. Because inoperative brake lamps are both a safety hazard and a common inspection failure, a faulty switch should be replaced without delay. The replacement clips onto the pedal bracket and indexes against the pedal arm so it self-adjusts to the correct actuation point, restoring correct stop lamp operation and a clean brake-applied signal to the vehicle's systems.
