  This is the genuine Ford crankshaft Woodruff key, the small half-moon steel key that indexes and locks the timing sprocket, oil pump drive and front damper to the crankshaft snout so they cannot rotate independently of the crank. Seated in the machined keyway, it transmits the rotational load and, just as importantly, fixes the exact angular position of the timing gear relative to the crankshaft, keeping cam and ignition timing referenced correctly. This is a broadly shared cross-platform component used across Ford's Modular and Triton engine families, fitting 4.6L and 5.4L V8 and 6.8L V10 applications in vehicles such as the Crown Victoria, E-Series vans, Expedition, Excursion, Explorer and Super Duty trucks, along with corresponding Lincoln and Mercury models, spanning from the early 1990s into the late 2010s. A builder or technician needs this key when reassembling the front of the engine after timing chain, front seal or damper service, or when the original key has been sheared, deformed or lost, which can allow the sprocket or damper to slip and cause timing errors, a wobbling harmonic balancer, knocking, or a no-start. Because it is a precision fit in the keyway, a fresh genuine key restores the correct interference and squares the timing components to the crank.
