  This is the front crankshaft oil seal, the molded lip seal that rides on the crankshaft snout at the front cover and keeps engine oil inside the timing case while the harmonic balancer and front pulley spin against it. Ford catalogs the part as Seal Assembly - Crankshaft Oil - Front under base number 6700, and it is a genuinely cross-platform seal with an unusually broad service window, covering Escort, Festiva, Mustang, Probe, Ranger, Taurus, Tempo and Thunderbird along with Lincoln Continental, Mark VI and Mark VII and Mercury Capri, Cougar and Tracer across the 1980 through 2001 model years and a wide spread of four-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines. Because it spans so many lines and generations, always confirm the application against your vehicle before ordering. A worn front seal is the classic source of an oil drip that appears at the front of the engine and slings oil onto the belt, pulleys and lower front cover; symptoms include fresh oil on the crank pulley and balancer, oil mist on the underside of the hood or front accessory drive, a dirty streak down the front of the block, a slipping or squealing belt contaminated with oil, and a gradually dropping oil level with no other obvious leak. The seal hardens with heat and age until the lip loses its spring tension against the crank, and a scored or grooved sealing surface on the balancer hub will destroy a new seal quickly, so inspect that surface first. Install the seal square to the bore with the correct driver, lubricate the lip lightly with clean engine oil, and never hammer it in at an angle.
