This is a genuine Ford Motorcraft rear drum brake self-adjuster, the star-wheel adjusting screw assembly that sets and maintains the running clearance between the brake shoes and the drum or drum-in-hat parking brake surface. As the shoes wear, the toothed star wheel turns to take up slack, keeping pedal or parking-brake travel consistent and the shoes correctly positioned against the drum. It fits a wide range of Ford vehicles, including E-250, E-350, and E-450 vans and Super Duty applications, and mounts on the rear brake backing plate on either the left or right side. Owners replace the adjuster when the star wheel is seized or rusted and will no longer turn, when the threads are stripped or corroded, when the parking brake or shoes will not adjust properly, or when a brake job calls for fresh hardware to restore proper self-adjustment. A frozen adjuster shows up as a low or long-travel parking brake, a dragging or unevenly worn shoe, or a rear brake that cannot be set correctly. Clean and lubricate the adjuster threads on installation and set the initial shoe-to-drum clearance per the Ford service procedure. This Motorcraft part restores factory self-adjusting operation of the rear drum brake.
