• Description:

  This genuine Ford Motorcraft drive axle output shaft seal (part BRS-40) seals the point where the rear axle shaft exits the differential or axle tube, retaining gear lubricant inside the housing while keeping road water, dust, and grit out of the axle bearing and seal bore. It is a decades-spanning service seal used across a broad range of Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury rear-wheel-drive cars and light trucks, including F-150 pickups with both the earlier integral non-locking axle and the later locking axle design, covering applications from the 1980s through the mid-2000s. A worn or hardened axle shaft seal is the usual cause of gear oil weeping onto the brake backing plate, a greasy film on the inside of the wheel and tire, a low differential fluid level, or a faint gear oil smell after driving; left unattended, the leak can contaminate the brake shoes or pads and accelerate axle bearing wear. Because axle-tube diameters and bearing styles vary between the non-locking, heavy-duty, and locking-hub configurations, confirm the correct seal for your specific axle before installation.
